Raphaël Leclaire recovered from two bouts with cancer and became inspired to raise funds for several cancer-related initiatives for the Montreal University Health Centre (MUHC). In the course of his efforts, he has been featured on the CTV National News as well as on Hockey Night in Canada in a story relating to his work with the Saku Koivu Foundation. BLIND MUSIC STUDENT INSPIRES US IN STORY ON CTV MONTREAL NEWS

Vytautos Bucionis was featured on a story reported by CFCF News on June 6th. It talked both about the remarkable way in which he deals with his visual impairment as well as the special relationship that he has developed with drumming teacher Nasyr Abdul Al-Khabyyr. It shows how Vytautos records bird songs and then creates compositions based on their melodies. Click

SOCIAL SCIENCE STUDENT FATIMA DAHER WINS SOCIAL JUSTICE AWARD

Fatima Daher has won the 2008-2009 Doug Miller Social Justice Award in recognition of her tireless efforts to promote social justice causes throughout Vanier. Fatima was a fixture at information booths run by the Vanier College Social Justice Committee throughout the year and was also editor and chief writer of the committee's newsletter. As well, Fatima served as a tutor, helping students both in the Learning Centre and the Social Science Resource Room. Click

STUDENT WINS A SILVER MEDAL AT CANADA-WIDE SCIENCE FAIR

Vanier's very own Rami
Sayar "Touchless Computer" presentation won a Silver Medal plus almost $10000 in various prizes and scholarships at the Canada-Wide Science Fair, held May 9 to 17 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He also recently won a Gold Medal and three other awards at the 2009 Montreal Regional Science and Technology Fair. Previously, he had won a Gold Medal in
the Senior category at last year's Bell Science Fair Provincial
Finals and then went on to take a Bronze Medal at the Nationals
held in Ottawa in May 2008. This year he won Silver! Click

LORIGIANO REPRESENTED QUEBEC AT MISS UNIVERSE CANADA COMPETITION

Congratulations to Honours Health Science graduating student TingJia Lorigiano who was the Quebec representative at the 2009 Miss Universe Canada pageant. TingJia had previously won the title of Miss Chinese Montreal and went on to be a finalist in the Miss Chinese International competition held last year in Hong Kong. TingJia won the People's
Choice Prize at the May 14 preliminary session, meaning she garnered the most online votes and was automatically in the top 20 finalists. Find out more. |

Congratulations to
Elodie Santos (at the right side
in the photo at left) and
DeCarla Clarke (at the far left side)
who each won a scholarship from the West Island Black Community
Association (WIBCA) at the groups 26th anniversary banquet.
The award acknowledges their academic success as well as their
community involvement through volunteering. The awards ceremony
was covered in an article published in the West Island Chronicle.

Architectural Technology student Stefanie Taylor won both
the $2000 Entrepreneurship Award as well as the $500 Regional Award
at the 2008 "Hats Off To You", a program that encourages
young women entering into traditionally
male-dominated careers.

MUSIC STUDENT OFF TO TORONTO IN CBC REALITY TV SERIES

music student Erin Berger participated in the opening rounds
of the new CBC reality TV series "How Do You Solve a Problem
Like Maria?" and was selected from thousands of auditionees
to be sent to Toronto to take part in the televised competition.

CHEETAH QUARTERBACK IS GAZETTE'S ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

| Our
star QB Myles Gibbon has been having an amazing season with
the Football Cheetahs this year. Not only did he lead the team to
a perfect 8-0 season record, he also smashed a long-standing league
record for total touchdown passes in a single season. (The
old record was 18 TD passes, Myles tossed 25 in 8 games.)
Gibbon was recently picked as the Athlete of the Week by the Montreal
Gazette and Global TV and was also featured in an article written
by Arpon Basu. Click

Tshimanga, a legendary Vanier Football alum who went on to a multimillion
dollar career in the NFL. Rémi, also, is a running back and

NURSING GRADUATE NABS TWO SCHOLARSHIPS

| Recently
graduated Nursing student Jennifer Lee Doran has
been awarded a $3000 Eaton Scholarship from the Canadian
Nurses Foundation to fund her Bachelor studies at McGill
University. Jennifer was also granted a $2000 Entrance Scholarship
from McGill. She had previously won a scholarship as a 2nd
year student and academic awards in her 1st and 3rd years
at Vanier. Jennifer was also renowned for her work as a

STUDENT IS WORLD CHAMPION IN TAEKWONDO

| We are
pleased to announce that Vanier student Karine Sergerie
became the first Canadian to ever win a world championship
in the sport of Taekwondo. She accomplished the feat at
the recent world championships held in Beijing, China. She
also just recently won gold at the 2007 Pan-Am Games held
in Rio de Janeiro. Both Karine and Vanier are justifiably
proud of these noteworthy accomplishments. Click

CHEETAHS WIN NATIONAL BASKETBALL CROWN

Congratulations go
out to the entire Lady Cheetahs Women's AAA Basketball team who
had a season that was the stuff of dreams. After dominating the
league during the regular season, they went on to first win the
Quebec Provincial Championships and then went in as the top-seeded
team into the Nationals where they emerged as victors. Click

Frank Bruno has had an amazing season.
On top of playing an instrumental role in Vanier's Bol d'Or football
championship, he also broke a league record this season for receiving
yards and then went on to play for a victorious Team Canada at
this year's Global Junior Championships. All of these achievements
are all the more remarkable considering the fact that he was
diagnosed with cancer when he was 16. Click
