Making the switch from French studies to English is not as difficult as one might think.
Tevy Chan from Honours Health Science is a local girl who graduated from École secondaire Saint-Laurent. “I spoke a bit of English, but not a lot before coming to Vanier,” confides Tevy. “It was challenging in the beginning and a big change in my first semester. Th e first two or three weeks were hard, and in Chemistry I had to invert everything, but finally the adaptation wasn’t too difficult.
“I have friends from high school who wanted to try to study in English but were afraid. But at Vanier, the Math and Science Centre have a lexicon which translates science terms and the Learning Centre offer tutoring and have a lot of resources to help with writing.”
“My first English course was diffi cult but then I started liking writing in English and now writing is fun! I even won the academic writing contest in my second semester!”
Tevy has been on the Dean’s Honour Roll since her arrival at Vanier. “What strikes me most about Tevy is her maturity and dedication to her studies,” states Edward Awad, Coordinator of the Biology Department. “Not only is she a student with remarkable intelligence but she is also very pleasant company, easy going and positive.”
Tevy is also involved in many activities including tutoring science, working in Th e Learning Centre, and cooking and entertaining at a local senior nursing home. On top of that she took part the Bridge Building Contest and Science Week at Vanier. “Last year during the Science Week Coffee House I played the piano.”
“Science is fun at Vanier,” she says. “Especially, Honours Science. We take many of our classes together and it’s great to have a whole group of students who share the same passion for science! We also do activities together like visiting museums and going to the McGill Excellence in Research Exhibition. And on top of that the Honours Science coordinator and teachers are also fantastic! They are so caring!”
What’s next for Tevy? Immunology at McGill University she declares with a broad enthusiastic smile.
