TLC AssistantThe Learning Centre volunteers are dynamic, responsible and creative individuals from every program in the College, who usually give one or two hours a week to The Learning Centre. While their interests are varied, they all share an innovative spirit! Volunteers are encouraged to concentrate on their interests and strengths, and to develop any skills they consider to be weak.

Responsibilities

TLC Assistants cover a wide spectrum of jobs. First and foremost, they are the people that students see when they have questions about The Learning Centre or its facilities. Some specific tasks include:

  • Creating posters and other materials using computer programs, such as PrintShop, Publisher and Microsoft Word, and posting them around campus;
  • Helping students schedule appointments with staff members;
  • Making photocopies at the Printshop;
  • Lending reference materials, such as dictionaries, thesauruses, and writing guides to students in need of them;
  • Ensuring that the handout shelves are filled and making more copies of the handouts if none are left in the handout filing cabinet.
  • Changing the Word of the Week, Brainbuster, etc. posters outside The Learning Centre every Monday;
  • Picking up the Vanier This Week every Monday and highlighting The Learning Centre's events, contests and/or messages, and then posting it on the Assistants' bulletin board as well as on the TLC window;
  • Watering the plants every Friday;
  • Maintaining the Centre's cleanliness;
  • Helping the staff organize and animate special events.

Rewards

The Learning Centre offers you many rewards as a TLC Assistant since you will not be paid for your work. Some of these rewards are meeting new friends as you work, becoming acquainted with The Learning Centre staff and various members of the College faculty, receiving a reference letter upon request (which may be used in applications for university and/or prospective employers) and adding valuable work experience to your CV. TLC Assistants have reported that, as a result of the program, they have improved their communication, interpersonal, computer, and leadership skills.
