By Mark Lidbetter, January 22nd, 2014

Georges St-Pierre and his Fondation Georges St-Pierre launched a new partnership with the Quebec Foundation for Athletic Excellence as GSP handed out the six inaugural bursaries to six student athletes last Tuesday at a ceremony in Kellert Hall of the YM-YWHA on Westbury. La Fondation Georges St-Pierre has committed to a three year, $45,000 program to support six student athletes who compete in combat sports such as boxing, fencing, judo, karate, Olympic wrestling, and tae kwon do. “To excel in high-performance sport all while pursuing academic studies is a challenge that must be faced every day,” George St-Pierre said. “It provides me with immense happiness to announce this three-year partnership with the Quebec Foundation for Athletic Excellence to assist young student athletes who, in the achievement of sport and educational excellence, are an example of success that can motivate other young people to do the same.” The first six recipients of a GSP bursary were Francis Carter, Olympic wrestling in the 69kg class, Xavier Gagnon, boxing, 57 kg class, Amélie Henry, taekwondo, Naomi Moindrot-Zilliox, fencing (foil), Camélie Boisveue, Karate, over 59kg and Gueorgui Poklitar, judo, under 66kg. Poklitar, a student at Vanier earned a $2,000 bursary for academic and athletic support and was thrilled to be one of the first to be recognized by GSP. “It’s really special, I’ve never gat a scholarship before,” Poklitar said. “It means a lot to me, especially when it’s George St-Pierre giving it to me.” GSP was joined by several past QFAE bursary recipients who went on to the Olympics and have trained with GSP in the disciplines of wrestling and judo. Among them was David Zilberman, who has trained with GSP at the Reinitz wrestling centre of the Y. “Getting a bursary from the foundation is a huge motivator, mentally and emotionally,” Zilberman said. “You feel like you are being supported, feel that what you are doing has value, has meaning.”
