WELCOME TO SOCIOLOGY

Jock Mackay (aka Johnny Wisdom)

Having grown up in rural Nova Scotia, Jock Mackay has been exploring the larger world ever since, and takes eastern Canada as his province. His B.A. (1968) is from King's College in Halifax, where he also completed an M.A. (1974) in Sociology at Dalhousie University. Along the way he has worked as a farm, construction and industrial labourer, a lobster fisherman, a bartender and student organizer. A stint in the army prepared his classroom manner.

He began teaching in Northern Ontario in 1970, and came to Montreal and Vanier College in 1976, teaching Sociology and Humanities. His love of country music led him to study folklore at Memorial University of Newfoundland, completing the Ph.D. in 1995. Education and popular culture are his special interests.
