This English course will examine two themes in modern and contemporary literature: 1) the image of the human and 2) the question of human ethics. Students will read a variety of literary texts and examine how each represents what it means to be human and to behave humanely (or inhumanely). Students will be instructed in the analysis of literary and dramatic texts. They will examine the various elements of fiction (plot, character, setting, etc.), practice applying these concepts to the reading of specific plays and short stories, and begin to develop the ability to produce written analyses and interpretations.
