603-103-MQ, Alternative Traditions
Western culture is notorious for its androcentrism. In this course, we will examine the traditions and conventions of English literature through the lens of the marginalized writer. Our focus will be on three prominent literary theories, Feminism, Marxism and Post-colonialism. We will read texts that are traditionally excluded from the cultural mainstream, and examine the social, political, and historical factors that contribute to this marginalization. Finally, we will reflect on how our understanding of culture is affected by excluding alternative perspectives, and why, in recent decades, interest in such perspectives has led to a reclamation of formerly marginalized authors and groups.
