|603-102-MQ, Adventures in Nonfiction |
This course explores what is often referred to as the fourth literary genre: nonfiction writing. Specifically, we will consider four subgenres of nonfiction—narrative journalism, the profile of a person, the autobiographical or personal essay, as well as the cultural critique essay. We will discuss the distinct characteristics of these subgenres, as well as their similarities, and the way that the boundaries between them are often crossed. We will also consider the way in which traditional nonfiction elements such as reporting and critical analysis are combined with creative elements such as literary techniques and devices. Students will learn to analyze and discuss the literary elements, and the social, historical and political contexts in which the articles, essays, and book are set; furthermore, they will be encouraged to develop their own personal writing style, voice and point of view when they try their hand at a few of the subgenres we discuss.
