603-102-MQ, Life Writing
This course provides an introduction to the genre of Life Writing through a selection of works of autobiography and memoir taken from a variety of periods, places and personalities; it is gender inclusive. Students are introduced to the history and types of sub-categories that comprise the Life Writing genre with special emphasis on the two types chosen for this course. We will examine issues of gender, ethnicity, race, war, genocide, health, science, evolution, family relationships and politics. The rapid growth in popularity of this genre will also be addressed from a literary and sociological perspective. We will pose the question, “How does autobiographical and memoir writing promote psychological goals as well—for example, healing from trauma, self-reflection and personal growth or individuation, coming to terms with the past?”
