In this this course we will explore representative works of Gonzo journalism from early pioneers such as Hunter S. Thompson to more recent practitioners of the genre such as Barbara Ehrenreich. We will examine what distinguishes this style from other forms of journalism and look at the influence it has had on different kinds of literature and how it has shaped webzines, video journalism and activist writing. In addition, we will place this style of journalism in its socio-political context and examine various issues including the representation of identity, gender, sexuality and race.
