520-913-VA, Art History (Prehistory to Realism)
This course is intended as a general overview of art in the Western world from prehistoric cave paintings to 19th-century Realism. Working chronologically, this survey explores various modes of visual representation (painting, sculpture, architecture, graphic arts, photography, ephemeral arts). Students will be introduced to fundamental styles, themes, forms, techniques, and movements in art history, and develop their interpretive and analytical skills accordingly. Key works will be examined in relation to their historical, social, economic, philosophical, and political contexts.
