510-HTN-VA, The Self Portrait
This course is a hands-on introduction to studio art in which technique and the importance of process in art, generating and interpreting creative ideas, and self-critiquing skills will be explored. Students will experiment and develop fundamental art-making skills through various observational projects based on the self-portrait thematic. Students will expand their understanding of observation to gazing, scrutinizing and examining their own physical appearance in order to render their unique anatomy and character traits. Students will be introduced to art-making techniques (such as drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking or collage) in order to touch upon and understand the dynamics and possibilities of various mediums. They will also be exposed to the language and terminology specific to the visual arts and use these as they develop the skills required for critical self-reflection.
