This course is a hands-on introduction to painting in which technique, the importance of process in art, generating and interpreting creative ideas, and self-critiquing skills are explored. Students will be introduced to the acrylic painting medium, and layering techniques of dry brushing, wet-on-wet blending, glazes and impasto. Through various assignments the student will practice such skills as gestural brushstroke application, blending and feathering, colour (hue, tone, value, saturation), opacity and transparency, texture, form, light and shadow, perspective and composition. The students will also be exposed to the language and terminology appropriate to painting and learn how to use these as they develop the skills required for critical self-reflection.
