502-303-VA, Theory of Translation
This course is designed to introduce students to the basic terminology and principles of translation theory and teach students to critically reflect on different methods and approaches to translating a text. Students will learn to situate source and target texts in a cultural context and to recognize linguistic and cultural factors that underlie the translation process. They will evaluate factors of social and cultural diversity inherent in the transfer of meaning between two languages, and critically assess translated texts as well as the role and task of the translator. Finally, students will do close readings of source and translated texts and write a final comparative analysis of translated texts.
