502-131-VA, Cultural Currents Part I
The aim of this course is to introduce students to the concepts and vocabulary with which to approach the study of the field of Arts, Communication and Literature. Students will explore defining periods and movements in human culture, from its early beginnings to the cultural rebirth that defines the Age of the Renaissance. Students will also examine the emergence and development of cultural movements as they relate to the social and historical contexts of their time and their impact over time. The concepts of continuity and change will structure the course as students navigate cultural objects, works, productions, phenomena or other elements of culture and civilization. Students will also situate works of art (painting, architecture, sculpture, music, literature, and drama) as cultural artifacts that embody the basic characteristics of a period or movement and indicators of the social and historical changes of their time. Students will be required to write a research paper and present the results.
