502-120-VA, Visual Literacy and Culture
This course will introduce students to visual communication which is at the core of a culture’s symbolic systems, whether as images, video, or active technological processes that structure the way we perceive and react to the world. Students will explore how visual messages represent concepts and define culture. Using three different theoretical models of analysis students will decode the visual language employed in various cultures. They will also examine cultural diversity and how different types of media, including visual technology, mass media and art impact and influence these cultures.
