502-113-VA, Myths, Legends and Fairy Tales
In this course students will be introduced to myths, legends and fairy tales with a particular focus on German, Roman (Italian), (pre) Hispanic, Russian and Chinese folklore. Students will learn to examine these texts through the lens of at least three different models of analysis, distinguishing between them and employing one to develop a critical perspective on a discourse. In order to apply models of analysis accurately to the texts, students will learn to understand the use and role of fundamental elements of literary techniques and devices as well as the codes and conventions of the different genres and how they convey meaning. Emphasis will be placed on analyzing, from different critical perspectives, the form of such texts as well as their cultural and social significance to cultural identity. Finally, students will employ some of the techniques and devices, and conventions addressed in the course in writing their own creative discourse.
