The purpose of this course is to demonstrate the nature of mathematical reasoning and to present some of the central concepts of mathematics and logic. Students will become familiar with both deductive and inductive systems. The course will also draw the distinction between “pure” and applied mathematics and will show the importance of mathematics as the language of science. Relationships between mathematics and music, philosophy, literature, and the fine arts will also be examined. The laboratory component may consist of demonstrations and exercises.
