The starting point for this course is a reconsideration of empathy as a necessary or useful first step in constructing our own personal and professional ethical framework. If we accept that the definition of empathy is both feeling someone else’s situation and also taking someone else’s perspective, empathy may be considered inherent to understanding the other and determining our relationship with and fair treatment of others. The questions arise: Whether empathy or self-interest is the dominant human motivator? What is the relationship between reason and empathy? How does social media today affect empathy? Can we enhance our sense of empathy? What are the consequences of empathy, or the lack thereof, in our personal lives, the business world, and the natural world today?
