The environmental crisis that we face today looms over our societies with the threat of disrupting ecological, economic, and social relations around the globe. This course will explore the relations between society and environment by surveying a collection of literary texts that deal with nature and relations to place as subjects and themes. Students will be encouraged to question and explore values and understandings of the interactions between humans and the environment through historical and contemporary texts from a range of genres including fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and essays.
