345-102-MQ, Being Canadian
A journalist once defined a Canadian as "an immigrant with seniority. In this course we will examine historical processes that have contributed to our current understandings of what it means to be Canadian. How do we construct our Canadian identity/-ies -- locally, regionally, nationally and globally? The role of the media in the formation and maintenance of Canadian-ness will also be critically assessed. Students will be encouraged to question their own understandings of what it means to be a Canadian, and to critically reflect on national symbols, values and beliefs.
