345-101-MQ, Knowing the Body
What does it mean to have a body? Are mind and body two separate entities? Is the human body the locus of the Self, or is the "real you" situated somewhere else? At times we feel as though we are trapped in our bodies, and at other times we are amazed by their abilities. The human body is often viewed as a source of beauty and a subject of art. It is often marvelled at as an object of scientific investigation. This course will examine the different ways that knowledge of the body have been generated over time and across cultures. Throughout the semester we will consider religious, scientific, and artistic forms of knowledge about the human body.
