345-101-MQ, Knowing Your Rights
The purpose of this course is to develop the knowledge of students with respect to the rights which are guaranteed by various documents, and, more especially, the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Knowledge of the Charter not only increases awareness as to fundamental rights, but also highlights the parameters within which the exercise of these rights is permissible. The course will begin with an exploration of the various theories relating to the nature of man, and the premises upon which social and political institutions have been based. Within this context, the course will examine the origin and developments of human rights and freedoms in international and national documents, with a focus on the Canadian Charter.
