This course presents a survey of the history of the Second World War. We will examine the war from political, socio-economic and cultural perspectives. Topics include the legacy of the First World War and its peace, the rise of fascist dictatorships, the European and Asian theatres of war, Canadian participation in the war, the continued decline of Western Europe as the centre of world power, the emergence of American and Soviet superpowers, the prelude to the Cold War, the concept of total war, the home front, the Holocaust, the Atom bomb and the overall destructive impact of the war.
