This course focuses on situational life events such as birthing, parenting, and illness/hospitalization of a child. The focus is on the child and/or parent. Nursing problems, physical and psychosocial assessments, communication skills, pharmacotherapy, and emergency measures will be addressed. Health teaching and health promotion will be further developed. A process for ethical decision-making will be introduced in Nursing 312/311. Ethical principles and values related to childbearing and childrearing will be explored. The student will plan and perform interventions to assist the new parent/newborn and the child/adolescent to meet their optimum level of health. Practice in clinical laboratory, as well as in obstetric and pediatric hospital settings will provide the student with opportunities to apply nursing skills and theory addressed in the classroom.
