This course will: examine major ideas about knowledge, teaching and learning that have influenced Western education; focus on the philosophies of education underlying recent developments in North America; and develop positive and useful ideas about education for students and teachers in the coming millenium. The emphasis of the course will be on the imaginative and intellectual aspects of the educational process; attention will also be given to the affective, social and moral dimensions. The final aim of the course will be to help students to understand and direct their own learning and thereby become 'self-educators'.
