340-202-VA, Philosophy in the Modern World
This course will examine some of the main themes of 17th and 18th century philosophy. We will begin by considering Descartes' attempt to arrive at certain knowledge and will consider the way that other philosophers developed - and in some cases rejected - his ideas. An attempt will be made to understand modern philosophy both as a continuation and as a departure from medieval and ancient philosophy and to appreciate the way that these ideas have developed in more recent times.
