America rules! Or at least its culture, economy and military seem to. But the United States has only existed since 1776; how has it come so far so fast? From its shameful past as a nation based on slavery and the slaughter of indigenous people to its emergence in the 20th century as a capitalist economic dynamo with an empire covering the globe, the United States has changed considerably. At the same time, it has grown into a nation of contradictions. To understand these contradictions, this course studies the transformation of the United States and the roles played by civil rights workers, social activists, and ordinary citizens as they have tried to make their country live up to its promises of freedom and justice for all.
