Day in the park offers some pop, punk and polish

Patrick Watson:
Watson is usually described in terms like "dream-like" and "wistful." So God bless whoever invented the effects box he was fiddling with during his late-afternoon show. Yes, Watson can certainly be wistful, but the manipulated vocals in a new song called Tracy's Waters punched the chest where so many of his songs caress the heart.

His crack band effortlessly shifted from barely there backbeats to Weight of the World's climactic wave of chaos, and while Watson's brave falsetto sometimes took a detour in search of a melody, the operative word is brave. A massive leap from the Montrealer's shows of just a year or so ago.
