How do you thank someone for a gift that changed your life? You make a similar gift to someone else.

Vanier College will celebrate that kind of donation at the “Pay it Forward” Benefit Concert on November 12th at 7:30 pm when two percussion ensembles and two choirs will perform to celebrate the ‘Pay it Forward’ donation of a marimba by 1981 Vanier Music graduate Greg MacIntosh to 2007 Music graduate Catherine Varvaro. The concert will be hosted by CJAD Radio’s Dan Laxer.

Coming to Vanier 35 years ago
“It was 35 years ago that I started my studies at Vanier College to become a professional percussionist and classical marimbist,” says Greg MacIntosh. “Vanier gave me wings and was an incredible experience. I was 17, and my family refused to support me financially if I decided to pursue music, but that did not discourage me, and all these years later, I look back on my two years at Vanier at the best two years of my life.”

A gift that changed my life
“30 years ago, one of my teachers gave me a marimba – that’s right, GAVE me a marimba – worth about $8,000 and it changed me, and my life, and my philosophy of life.”

Time to Pay it Forward
Because of difficulty with his wrists Greg now finds it painful to practice the marimba and has decided it’s time to “PAY IT FORWARD” this wonderful gift to a deserving young musician – Catherine Varvaro, a recent graduate of Vanier, whose story is somewhat similar to his.

Marimba Magic and Broadway Tunes
During the concert Greg MacIntosh and Catherine Varvaro will play the marimba, (a percussion instrument consisting of a set of wooden bars struck with mallets) as soloists and ensemble players with 4 Men and a Marimba
and the Lindsay Place High School and Vanier College Percussion Ensembles.  The Lyric Theatre singers and the Ensemble vocal Extravaganza will also participate in this celebratory concert. Alumnus Patrick Graham will be featured in Vanier percussion teacher Robert Slapcoff’s composition Breezy Point Variations and this concert will welcome the return of retired music teacher Glenna Ferland as piano accompanist in two selections.

Proceeds go to Musical instrument Fund
The proceeds from this concert will benefit the Vanier College Musical Instrument Fund. Tickets (General admission $20, students/seniors $10) can be purchased at the Bookstore or at door on the night of the concert. For reservations, please call 514-744-7500.
