This year the 13th Annual Vanier College Big Band Benefit Concert will be more than a concert. It will be a joyous celebration of Vanier’s 40th anniversary. The concert, which raises funds for music scholarships, will feature Jazz pianist, Oliver Jones, as both the host for the evening and the special guest artist who will perform with the professional J.L. Big Band conducted by Christopher Smith.
A special Vanier College Alumni Big Band will feature at least 21 former Vanier students, some of whom are current teachers including Christopher Smith (conductor), Jocelyn Couture (trumpet),) and Nasyr Abdul Al Khabyyr (drumset). As well, teachers Nick Ditomaso and Jacques Labelle (electric guitar) will also perform with the Alumni Big Band.
The show will open with the Vanier College Big Band directed by Jocelyn Couture and featuring singer Cyndi Charlemagne followed by the ever popular J.L. Big Band, an ensemble of some of the best jazz musicians in Montreal, including Tony Romandini.
Capping off the evening will be the Alumni Big Band with such well-known musicians as Muhammad Abdul Al-Khabyyr (trombone) and Morgan Moore (jazz bass).
The concert begins on Monday, April 11, 2011, at 7:30 pm in the Vanier Auditorium (A-103). Tickets (available at the Print shop and F224) are $10 for the Vanier Community and Alumni, $5 for students and $20 for the general public. Come and celebrate Vanier’s 40th anniversary and enjoy the music!
