Vanier College is pleased to announce the names of three Vanier students who were awarded $1000 scholarships at the recently held Gala 40 ans – 40 bourses, celebrating the 40th anniversary of the founding of the Cegep system. The award winners are Jerina Harizaj, Weijia Li and Jamie Webber. All three students were chosen for their academic excellence and their pursuit of extracurricular and volunteer activities.
Weijia Li, who is in Health Science, volunteers at a Montreal hospital and plans to study Medicine at McGill. Among her many volunteer activities she acts as a Vanier Ambassador, greeting the public, including prospective students, during important college events, helps organize campus activities, and tutors students in mathematics.
Jerina Harizaj who is in Pure and Applied Science plans to study Electrical Engineering at McGill University. In her spare time she tutors other students in mathematics and in the summer she volunteers with a free trade organization. She also works 18 hours a week to support herself since she is on her own in Montreal, having left her family in Albania in order to study here in Quebec.
Jamie Webber is completing a double DEC in Science and Music. He plans to study Neuroscience at McGill and ultimately hopes to complete an MD-PhD which couples a medical degree with a research doctorate. In the course of his studies at Vanier, Jamie took part in Vanier Aids Action in Africa whereby he travelled to Malawi to study firsthand the effects of AIDS on sub Saharan Africa.
