It is in recognition of his outstanding service to the English Department of Vanier College, that Ron Curtis has been named the winner of the 2011-2012 Academic Coordinator Award. Created by Director General, Gilbert Héroux, the Academic Coordinator Award recognizes exemplary leadership skills in a Coordinator of an Academic Program, Department, or Discipline.
And indeed, throughout most of his 16 years at Vanier, Ron Curtis has been a leader in the English Department. From 2000 to 2003 he was department Curriculum Coordinator; from 2003 to 2005 he was department Coordinator; and from 2008 to 2011 he was department Placement Coordinator.
In supporting Ron for this award, the nominating committee members indicated a few examples of his important work. “First, his impact on the functioning of the English department through the writing of key policies has been immense,” they state. “He has been vitally involved in the creation of our Protocol for Course Assignments; CI Subbing Guidelines; Equity Guidelines; and Policies and Guidelines for English Department Projects. He has also been instrumental in the revisions to our Model Course Outlines.”
The nominating committee also underlined Ron’s contributions beyond the department: his involvement in the formulation or revision of college policies such as the Student Proficiency in the Language of Instruction and Cheating and Plagiarism policies and his work on program committees and program evaluations. They add that as the first Coordinator of the General Education Committee Ron is laying the groundwork for more formalized and effective interaction between General Education teachers and their counterparts in other programs.
Ron has also directed several Academic Success Projects including a study of the success factors of Nursing and Special Care students in their General Studies courses; a project gathering English pedagogical material into an online database; and the At-Risk Student Project for which he wrote the report entitled “Improving Identification and Support Strategies and Services for At-Risk Incoming First Language Students with Weak English Language Skills.”
“While Ron’s imprint on department and college pedagogy cannot be overestimated, it is his personal attributes that have made us think of him above all else for this award,” indicate the nominators. “Ron’s commitment to the College has been unflagging. He attends every English Department meeting and he is always available to meet with teachers to address their concerns and help them solve problems. His integrity is endemic to all of his actions: he is guided by the welfare of students, teachers, and Vanier College itself. And finally, his influence derives from the vast store of experience he has built up during his years at Vanier and the wisdom that is a natural part of his character.”
Congratulations to Ron Curtis, a deserving winner of the 2011-2012 Academic Coordinator Award.
