The 16th Annual Vanier College Big Band Benefit Concert for Music Department Scholarships hosted by Oliver Jones, will be held on Monday, April 14th at 7:30pm in the Vanier Auditorium. The concert, which is dedicated to renowned Montreal jazz saxophonist, Sayyd Abdul Al Khabyyr, will be opened by the Vanier College Big Band, directed by Jocelyn Couture. The Vanier Big Band recently won gold at this year’s JazzFest des Jeunes du Québec competition and has been invited to perform at the Montreal International Jazz Festival this summer.
Following their performance, there will be testimonials on behalf of Sayyd Abdul Al Kahbyyr and the screening of a video on his life and career. A performance of Duke Ellington and Juan Tizol’s 1930s jazz standard Caravan, by Oliver Jones, Charles Ellison, Dave Watts and Nasyr Abdul Al Khabyyr (Vanier drumset teacher and alumnus,) will close the first half of the evening program.
After intermission, Oliver Jones will award a number of jazz scholarships to Vanier music students before returning to the second half of the program that will feature the professional J.L. Big Band conducted by Christopher Smith and the participation of Muhammad Abdul Al Khabyyr in a piano solo.
The striking concert poster was designed by Sandra Pereira, a student in the Micropublishing and Hypermedia Program.
Tickets (General Admission $20, Students/Seniors $10) can be purchased at the Vanier College Bookstore. The concert begins at 7:30 pm in the Vanier College Auditorium. Do come and enjoy an evening of great Big Band music!
