Vanier College is pleased to announce that the Jake’s Co-op bookstore had its official ribbon cutting opening ceremony on December 7th, 2016. The new bookstore is run by a student cooperative and is part of the Fédération québécoise de coopératives en milieux scolaires (FQCMS). The bookstore team had to roll up their sleeves to open on time for the start of the autumn 2016 semester.
The official opening was attended by Alan De Sousa, the Mayor of the Borough of St-Laurent, André Gagnon, Director General of the FQCMS, Gaston Bédard, President/Director General of the Conseil Québécois de la Coopération et de la Mutualité (CQCM) and members of the Board of Directors of the Vanier Co-op.
“Jake’s Co-op has received a lot of positive feedback from the students since its opening and I feel that it is mostly due to the fact that we offer a channel for students to gain valuable work experience and to voice their opinion as to what the student community needs,” said Christine Boulais, Manager of the Coop bookstore who is thrilled with the reaction of students to the new bookstore.
“We are very pleased with the new design and with the advantages the new cooperative bookstore offers to the entire Vanier community,” said Mr. John McMahon, Director General of Vanier College.
Members of the coop will find themselves obtaining good discounts on almost every article in the store, except food and beverages. Since the membership is for life, the savings can add up pretty quickly which makes becoming a member a worthwhile option for students and visitors alike. The coop bookstore also offers job opportunities for students. It hires up thirty students per semester and provides pertinent work experience.
Vanier College invested $170,000 in renovations for the bookstore and the Jake’s Co-op invested $270,000 in the new bookstore. Given that the bookstore is immediately adjacent to the student mall, the new bookstore is a welcome enhancement of the entire area.
The bookstore will continue to actively participate in enhancing the student life at Vanier College and will keep updating its product line throughout the year.
