The Board of Directors of Vanier College is pleased to announce that Normand W. Bernier has been named the new Director General of Vanier College. Mr. Bernier has 35 years of experience in the educational milieu and is the former Director General of Cégep de Drummondville.
“I am very much looking forward to this new mandate and am pleased to be part of the team who will help our College to move forward. I’m honoured to now be part of the Vanier community,” said Mr. Bernier.
A wide range of experience in the education sector
Throughout his career Mr. Bernier has served as Academic Dean at several Cégep’s. He also worked as Director of the University-Milieu liaison Service at the Université du Québec in Outaouais and has taught management at Concordia University. Over the years he also worked in the areas of finance, human resources and material resources at other educational institutions. After his retirement in 2011 he worked as an external member of various panels for the Commission d’évaluation de l’enseignement collégial (CEEC).
Cegep a place that fosters growth and development in young people
Mr. Bernier said he has always been a champion of the CEGEP system. “A CEGEP should offer an environment where students can grow, meet diverse people and have exchanges with others. As Director General I see myself focused on a leadership role and motivating people to perform at their highest level possible. I’m also a huge proponent of team work. Alone, you get nothing done and a Director General’s role is to find ways to achieve things that are in the best interests of both staff and students as well as remaining open to the development of new ideas.”
While he officially retired in 2011 Mr. Bernier said he was eager to take on a new challenge and felt the opportunity to come work at Vanier College was extremely appealing.
Guiding values: Respect for others, communication and transparency
“One thing I succeeded in doing at CEGEP de Drummondville was to get people to work together and enjoy themselves. But after two mandates it was time for a change and I am very much looking forward to facing different challenges at Vanier College. As well, I plan to continue adhering to the three fundamental values that have guided me throughout my career as a manager: respect for others, communication and transparency,” Mr. Bernier said.
Mr. Bernier will officially start his new functions at Vanier College on January 15th 2014.
