Radio jazz host extraordinaire, Katie Malloch, will be celebrated this year at the annual Vanier College Big Band Benefit Concert on Monday, April 16th. Oliver Jones will return as host for the 11th year and will also dedicate a performance of one of his compositions to Katie Malloch.
Guest artist André Moisan – featured singer Christina Quadros
The Vanier College Big Band directed by Jocelyn Couture and featuring singer Christina Quadros will open the concert, followed in the second half with the J.L. Big Band conducted by Christopher Smith. The concert guest artist is André Moisan, clarinet virtuoso with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra.

Some of the selections on this year’s program include Cole Porter’s I’ve got you under my skin as well as The Lamp is Low by Peter DeRose and Bert Shefter based on Ravel’s Pavane pour une infante défunte, one of Katie Malloch’s favourite pieces.

Every year the concert is dedicated to an individual or group that has contributed to the Montreal community in the cultural or academic fields. Katie Malloch who recently retired from CBC radio richly deserves this recognition.
A lasting imprint on Jazz
“We are honoured to dedicate the 2012 concert to Katie Malloch for the huge impact her CBC career has had on the jazz world in Montreal over many years,” states Nadia Turbide, Coordinator of the Vanier Music Department. “Katie is greatly loved by all jazz musicians and has left her imprint on youth and jazz. It’s a pleasure for Vanier to mark her retirement by demonstrating our sincere appreciation of her contribution to the vitality of jazz in our city at CBC Radio.”
A rich career
Katie Malloch began freelancing for the CBC in 1972 and became a staff announcer in 1975. Prior to hosting Tonic, a nightly jazz program on CBC Radio 2, she was co-creator and host of Jazz Beat which aired on CBC radio from 1983 to March 2007.
