All Set for a Black History Month Concert!
Wednesday, February 20, 2013
12:00 to 13:00

Today in the Auditorium the Vanier College Department of Music does its part to honor Black History Month with a special presentation and concert. Vanier teacher Glen Ethier will give a brief presentation on how the earliest 1940s and 1950s electrified blues scene developed out of the delta blues traditions of the 1920s-1940s. From the “jump blues” of performers like Charles Brown and LaVern Baker to the solid bass-riff stylings of Willie Dixon and Howlin’ Wolf to the masculine swagger songs of Muddy Waters and Bo Diddley, the presentation will be illustrated amply by live concert performances of the songs. As part of the department’s student success series of events, three excellent combos of music students—under the special guidance of performance teachers—have come together to learn the original tunes and present them here. It’s the best of all possible worlds: socially relevant, educational, entertaining and absolutely free. Don’t miss it!
