Lloyd Elder

It was with deep regret that the college announced the passing of Lloyd Elder on May 24, 1997, after a four-year struggle with leukemia. Lloyd was a faculty member of the Physical Education Department from 1973. He is sadly missed by all those who knew and worked with him. A service was held in the Urgel Bourgie Funeral Home Chapel on Tuesday, May 27, 1997. A reception was held later that day at the Sports Complex. Donations were requested in his name to the Oncology Department at the Jewish General Hospital.

Lloyd Elder grew up in Lachute, Quebec. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Sir George Williams University in 1967 and a Bachelor of Education degree from McGill University in 1967. In 1973 he received a Master of Arts degree with a major in Mathematics from Concordia University. Lloyd worked in the North Island School Board from 1963 to 1973. During this period he was actively involved in coaching high school sports. His areas of specialization included Basketball, Volleyball, Football, Rugby and Badminton. Lloyd joined the Physical Education Department at Vanier College in 1973, initially at the Snowdon Campus. For many years, Lloyd was a member of the TMR Rugby Club. He was involved in sports both at the college and in the community.

In recognition of Lloyd Elder's contribution as a Physical Education teacher at Vanier for many years, the College set up the annual Lloyd Elder Memorial Scholarship, which is awarded to a student combining excellence in both Mathematics and sports. It is awarded to a returning Vanier student upon the completion of their first year. More info.
