Dr. Michael Davis

It was with deep sadness that we learned of the sudden passing of Dr. Michael Davis who was the Medical Director on the Advisory Board of the Respiratory and Anaesthesia Program here at Vanier. We offer our sincere condolences to his family as well as to all of of his friends and colleagues. There was an article on Dr. Davis written by Anne Sutherland that appeared in the Montreal Gazette of September 21st. The link to the story can be found further down on this page. Below is a testimony to Dr. Davis written by the Vanier colleagues with whom he worked.

In Memoriam: Dr. Michael Davis

“I was sad to learn of the passing of Dr. Michael Davis, who was the Medical Director on the Advisory Board of the Vanier Respiratory and Anaesthesia Program for the past ten years,” states George Archer, Dean of Applied Technology.  “We will miss his counsel, his support and his dry humour.  Dr. Davis leaves a tremendous gap and he will be sorely missed.  He was a long-time friend of Vanier’s who enthusiastically and unfailingly attended every Advisory Board meeting, in spite of an extraordinarily busy clinical and teaching schedule at the Montreal Children’s Hospital.”

Sara Engelsberg, Coordinator of Respiratory and Anaesthesia, indicates that Dr. Davis who was a respiratory specialist at the MCH, “was a great promoter of Respiratory Therapy at the Children’s Hospital and also at Vanier.  He was very active on the R.A.T. Advisory Board, giving suggestions on issues arising regarding the program.”

Carole Gauthier of the R.A.T. Department adds that “Dr. Davis always took care of our students very well.  In 2000 there was a labour dispute at the Montreal Children’s Hospital that threatened to deprive our third year students of their much needed internship.  Dr. Davis personally took our students under his wing and made sure that none of them lost out on their internship. He was always very, very available and very generous.”

“More recently,” she says, “in response to a question I asked him, he sent me his entire teaching files which Vanier can now use as a reference: course notes, Power Point presentations, speeches, everything!  He was a very good teacher and he was always conscious of ensuring that the link between teaching and practice was still aligned.”

George Archer sums up his high regard for Dr. Davis. “He was really an exceptional man.”
