When Vanier
College student Stefanie Taylor received a Hats Off to You! 2007-2008
Award on May 5th, she was following in the footsteps of her father,
her grandfather and her great grandfather. And that's the point
of Hats Off to You! A province-wide program run by the Ministry
of Education which awards scholarships to young women who dare
to follow their own bliss and are enrolled in technical programs
leading to traditionally male-dominated occupations. Stefanie
Taylor, a student in Architectural Technology at Vanier College
won a $500 regional award and a $2000 award for Entrepreneurship.
"Winning
this competition is so motivating. It makes me want to keep doing
better," she says of her award. Stefanie comes from a family
of builders, contractors and renovators. She grew up near and
on construction sites, watching, learning, and getting a taste
for the family occupation in construction and design through helping
her father who built two of their family homes. "My dream
is to start my own business buying and renovating houses,"
she explains, "like they do on Flip that House."

Stefanie
is so passionate about her interest that she chose to come all the
way from North Hatley to Montreal in order to attend Vanier College,
the only English Cegep in Quebec that offers the Architectural Technology
program. "I am so eager to graduate from my program and go
out into the workforce; however what I am more excited about is
continuing to learn, develop skills and acquire experience so that
I can, one day, open my own office. Architectural Technologies has
allowed me to develop my imagination. It has also opened my eyes
to the complex world of construction and I believe that I can combine
what I have learnt with my determination and strengths to run my
own business.

Stefanie who
attended Alexander Gault High School in Lennoxville before
coming to Vanier, hasn't yet decided what she will do after
Cegep. At the moment she plans to work for a while then
perhaps pursue university studies. "I'm thinking of
Architecture but I'm also interested in construction project
management." This summer she'll learn more about the
ropes of the trade when she goes to work for a construction
company in Sherbrooke.
Congratulations,
Stefanie!
