below) and Raphaël was inspired to start raising funds for cancer research. After getting his father's business friends on board, the $4000 he raised at his school was matched with an astounding $50,000 he raised though various corporate sponsors.
Raphaël has appeared on TV as the subject of news stories for both the CTV National News and the Radio Canada News, and was also part of a Hockey Night in Canada story about the Saku Koivu Foundation. All video clips can be seen from the links at the bottom of this page.
The latest initiative for Raphaël, who has been cancer-free since March 2007, is riding in the Tour de Lance event where cyclists get to ride with Lance Armstrong providing they have raised a minimum of $25,000. The amount should prove no problem for him as he has already raised just under $100,000 in previous fundraising efforts for such various MUHC cancer-related initiatives such as the Sarah Cook Fund of the Cedars Cancer Institute for Children and the Pedal for Kids Ride, a week-long event that raises money for The Montreal Children’s Hospital Foundation.
