United Nations Millennium Development GoalsThe eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) – which range from halving extreme poverty to halting the spread of HIV/AIDS and providing universal primary education, all by the target date of 2015 – form a blueprint agreed to by all the world’s countries and all the world’s leading development institutions. They have galvanized unprecedented efforts to meet the needs of the world’s poorest (UN Web Services Section, 2008).

  1. Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
  2. Achieve universal primary education
  3. Promote gender equality and empower women
  4. Reduce child mortality
  5. Improve maternal health
  6. Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other diseases
  7. Ensure environmental sustainability
  8. Develop a global partnership for development

Question Mark
These goals are so broad! Is there a way to measure whether we are reaching them or not?
Check out the UN Millennium Project for specific targets and indicators used to measure progress on each goal.
Question Mark
Can I see the progress being made on these goals?
Yes! Check out the MDG Monitor map and see the progress being made on these of these goals on a map. Try zooming into specific countries or regions. It even has a cool countdown clock to 2015.
Question Mark
Why is education an important part of the Millennium Development Goals?
Education is the foundation of all societies. It helps to reduce poverty, improve health, creates more opportunitites for women and so much more! In fact, education plays a central role in achieving all of the other MDGs. Check out what CIDA, the World Bank and UNESCO say about the importance of education.
Question Mark

How can access to education help in achieving other MDGs?

All the MDGs are in fact linked. Poverty increases the chances that children will be kept at home or sent to work instead of school. However, education is essential to provide better jobs and to increase public health!

In January 2008, a group of Vanier students and staff went to Malawi as part of Vanier Aids Action in Africa. Check out Judy Macdonald's Kasungu Schools report which shows how AIDS, poverty and gender disparities have devastated the education system and how aiding this trend all ties in with promoting MDGs 1, 2 and 3.

Question Mark
What can I do? I want to help!
Good for you! There are many ways in which you can help. Check out the Take Action page for ideas on what you can do and how you can get involved at Vanier.
