Mission
This project aims to empower students to be aware of, and involved in, the developmental issues Canada supports. Specifically, it focuses on the HIV/AIDS pandemic with emphasis on how it affects sub-Saharan Africa, particularly women. The goal of the project is to inspire students to offer sustained support andtake action pertaining to Canada's participation in its combat against this pandemic.
Malawi Study Trip
In January 2008, a group of six Vanier students and three staff and faculty went on a Study Trip to Malawi, Africa, to learn more about the epidemic at a grass-roots level. The students who participated in the trip are now giving presentations to fellow students at Vanier and in Montreal high school so that many young Canadians can acquire an understanding of how HIV/AIDS has affected sub-Saharan Africa.
Goals of the Project and Vanier College
This project is aligned with the goals and objectives of Vanier which can be found in the College's Mission Statement and the Vanier policy, International Cooperation, Exchanges, and Training. A project that involves students analyzing and entering into dialogue about HIV/AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa and what Canadian citizens can do to combat the problem will advance the College's goals.
Vanier AIDS Action in Africa Partners
We are pleased to have as our partners in this project: Vanier College Teachers' Association (VCTA), Vanier College Students' Association (VCSA), Women's Studies, Vanier Social Justice Committee, and the Makupo Development Group. We are also working closely with Vanier College's three faculties to implement this project. We also welcome interested individuals from the Vanier community to join us.
