Eighty-three people attended the Buy-A-Net Fundraising dinner held at Casa Grecque in Pierrefonds. The event was to celebrate World Malaria Day and raise money and awareness for Malaria prevention. The dinner and silent auction were a huge success with the final proceeds totaling $5,000.
This will provide enough bed-nets for 15 villages in Uganda, protecting close to 4,000 people from malaria. Thank you to all who supported our first endeavor.
Buy-A-Net is a nonprofit organization run by volunteer Canadian nurses. It is endorsed by the Canadian Nursing Association and has representatives in all provinces across Canada. Melodie Hicks and Michelina Catallozzi, from the Vanier Nursing department, are the Quebec ambassadors for Buy-A-Net.
This semester, Janice Pacquette’s Sociology of Health class required that students volunteer 20 hours of community service. Eight nursing students from this class have been busy spreading awareness about malaria and collecting funds. The students planned several activities including a bake sale, visits to local churches and displays throughout the college. Their presence and assistance at the dinner also helped make it the success that it was! To date they have managed to raise over one thousand dollars. We have been so proud of the work they have done and the commitment they all made to the cause!
