Jailson Lima from the Chemistry Department presented the workshop Using Creativity to Promote Deep Understanding of Chemistry Concepts during the 23rd IUPAC International Conference on Chemistry Education held in Toronto in July.  Using an active-learning approach, participants learned how to design creative assessments inspired by the Art & Science Project (www.artandchemistry.ca) by experiencing it from a student’s perspective.  They worked in pairs to brainstorm ways to portray basic chemistry concepts using visual arts, develop a rough-draft sketch of the artwork, and present it to the class.  The activity ended with a panel discussion about the strengths of this approach as well as the hurdles that teachers may face when trying to enhance students’ learning experiences using multidisciplinary instructional strategies for active learning.
