Professional Practice
Prerequisite: none

This course gives students a survey of the Immigration profession in Canada in historical terms and from a current perspective emphasizing the importance of the Canadian Society of Immigration Consultants. Course topics may include: Historical trends in Canadian immigration, world wide trends in immigration, setting up a practice as a profit centre, various laws impacting on immigration/CSIC operations and control over the profession.

Laws and Jurisprudence
Prerequisite: none

This course aims to give the student a background into the legislation and laws governing the various types of Quebec and Canadian immigration programs. Course topics may include: Study of the immigration act of Canada, study of immigration regulations of Canada, study operations manuals, study the Quebec criminal code, study the Canadian criminal code and study the Quebec immigration laws.

Professional Communications
Prerequisite: none

This course will assist students to communicate clearly, effectively and honestly with all clients and government officials. Since most communication will be at a distance, correct communication is a highly important tool of the immigration practitioner. Course topics may include: Client psychology, damage control, stress intervention, counselling, learning to listen and to use immigration terms.

Assessing Immigration Applications
Prerequisite: Professional Practice (410-101-VA) + Laws and Jurisprudence (410-102-VA)

This course will enable students to determine whether an interested client is eligible for Quebec or Canada immigration, taking into account the client’s age, education, language abilities, work history and financial assets. Course topics may include: Interviewing potential clients, analysis of client potential as successful applicant, explaining risk factors to client, dealing with troublesome clients, recognizing potential problematic clients, handling application failure, setting realistic expectations for clients, analysis of competing programs, fees determination and draft client agreement.

Administrative Activities

This course prepares students to run an immigration practice covering such diverse topics as marketing, office bookkeeping, client accounting, document management, office set-up and time management. Course topics may include: Marketing and public relations, advertising, office set-up, office procedures, file management, accounting and bookkeeping, client record keeping, taxation and ethical standards of CSIC.

Processing Immigration Applications
Prerequisite: Assessing Immigration Applications (410-104-VA)

This course will equip students to professionally prepare different types of immigration applications, including those for permanent residence, temporary residence, refugee status and family sponsorship. Course topics may include: Drafting skills in application presentation, study of different forms currently used for various applications, strategies for obtaining information, effective client communication skills, preparing user friendly questionnaires and document lists, communicate with government departments, presentation to clients of advantages and disadvantages of different types of applications and strategies.

Representing Clients
Prerequisite: Assessing Immigration Applications (410-104-VA) + Processing Immigration Applications (410-106-VA)

This course is designed to prepare students to represent clients before third parties using existing legislature. Students will study research techniques, preparation of argument summaries, ethical behaviour, decorum at hearing, strategies to adopt in various situations and prescriptions. Course topics may include: Analysis of laws, regulations and operations manuals, use of precedent case law, effective writing skills in drafting legal and factual arguments, techniques of witness preparation, ethical behaviour before and at hearings, debating techniques and ethical behaviour at hearings
