Greetings from the Vanier College Music Department.
This year marks the 10th anniversary of the annual Big Band Benefit Concert
for music department scholarships. In addition to the $200 J.L. Big Band
scholarship awarded to the most deserving Stage Band student and the $200
Oliver Jones Scholarship given to the outstanding graduating jazz student,
we will be adding a $100 annual Justin Time Jazz Scholarship given to a
promising first-year student donated by record company owner, Jim West.
Legendary pianist and host of the event, Oliver Jones, as well as guest
artist Jeri Brown are both Justin Time recording artists.
The Vanier Stage Band is made up of 19 young instrumentalists and
singer Shaday Lavallé under the direction of Jocelyn Couture. The J.L. Big
Band, conducted by Christopher Smith, is an ensemble of some of the best
jazz musicians in Montreal, who get together every Monday night to perform
new repertoire collected by their director Jean Lessard.
This year's special concert will be dedicated to Wah Keung Chan, Vanier Science graduate
and founding-editor of Montreal's La Scena Musicale. Invited guests who will
speak on his behalf are Carole Channer, retired Vanier Math teacher, Noel
Spinelli, well-known philanthropist, and Montreal countertenor Daniel
The poster for the event was designed by student Rebecca De Comarmond (Micromedia program). Tickets ($20) can be purchased at the Print shop or at the door on
Monday, April 14th. The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m.
Do come and celebrate this 10th anniversary with us!!
