Vanier College Endorses Indigenous Education Protocol

Saint-Laurent, September 13th 2017- John McMahon, Vanier College’s Director General, is pleased to announce that on September 13, 2017, Vanier College, in collaboration with the Vanier Indigenous Circle, hosted a ceremony to mark the official signing of the CICan Indigenous Education Protocol. In attendance were several members of local Indigenous communities who have ongoing relationships with Vanier College. Among them were Michael Loft, Kahnawake Elder and former McGill professor in Social Work, Nakuset, Executive Director of the Native Women’s Shelter of Montreal, and Alan Harrington, C.E.O. of Montreal’s Red Urban Project.
“Our Board of Directors’s decision to approve the protocol is our way of demonstrating that we are committed to putting in place measures designed to ensure Indigenous students can succeed along with their fellow peers,” said John McMahon.
“At the same time it shows Vanier is dedicated to building relationships and remaining accountable to Indigenous communities who are in support of self-determination through education, training and applied research,” said Mr. Mcmahon, who, prior to coming to Vanier, worked as a Principal of Jannimmarik School in Kuujjuaq and as an academic and student counselor in the Canadian Arctic.
In addition to raising the importance of post-secondary education for Indigenous peoples and stimulating dialogue with them, the protocol seeks to ensure Colleges respect and recognize that Indigenous education can strengthen colleges’ contributions to improving the lives of individuals living in these communities.
“This is about raising awareness about Indigenous education and expanding the scope of potential partnerships so it’s a win-win for everyone involved. Vanier College is proud to do whatever it can to help promote student success for members of the Indigenous people as well as for all of our students,” said Anne-Claude Banville, Academic Dean at Vanier.
