| The full program of studies requires six semesters to complete. There are two semesters per calendar year. The fall semester starts near the end of August and finishes near the middle of December. The winter semester starts near the end of January and finishes near the middle of May. |

| Students may enter the full program of studies in either the Fall semester (March 1st application deadline) or the Winter semester (March November 1st application deadline). |

| Students with advanced standing in computer courses or with other completed post-secondary education may qualify for a shortened duration of their studies. Please check Advanced Study / University Studies for more details. |

| Program Content Outline |

| This Computer Science career program at Vanier consists of four main areas of study and work. These four areas are outlined below. Students must, also, develop their oral and written communication skills in both French and English since these skills are essential to all computer-related occupations in Québec. |

| Computer courses form the first and major area of study. Different types of programming: |
| |
- object-oriented programming
- traditional procedural programming
- database programming
- event-driven programming
- Internet and multimedia programming
- Different programming languages (Java, Visual Basic, C++, and some COBOL).
- Database systems using SQL, Oracle, JDBC and ODBC.
- Analysis and design studies using computerized graphical design tools for electronic commerce (e-commerce) and database projects
- Study of computer operating systems, computer networks, telecommunications and Internet systems

| A 'stage' (work-training period) in industry, which runs three days per week during the entire sixth semester of studies. Students work on real computer projects in a business setting. The stage gives valuable work experience, which is essential to getting a permanent job in the computer field. |

| Selected courses in Mathematics, Business Administration, and the Psychology of the Workplace round out the specialized preparation of the career program. |

| All Cegep students must pass courses in General Studies (English, French, Humanities, Physical Education and Complementary studies). These courses develop oral and written skills. They help students to develop a mature and informed outlook on the world. |
